This website was developed as part of a neighborhood research project by students of the CUNY Honors College, City College campus. As a developing area and a neighborhood bordering our own home campus in West Harlem, El Barrio proved to be of particular interest to us. Each topic on this website was thoroughly researched by an individual student. Photographs were taken during our class walking tour of East Harlem, conducted by our Professor, Gabriel Haslip-Viera. Finally, all our research and efforts came together during our bi-weekly seminar, The Peopling of New York, where we maintained a particular focus on the history and evolution of East Harlem.
It is our intention that this website provide an accurate, multifaceted perspective on East Harlem as a cultural entity, a political structure, a haven for the arts, and a dynamic neighborhood. Our multimedia and special site features were created as educational tools for both the well-seasoned scholar and curious high school student alike. Above all, this website is the product of an academic exploration, and it is our hope that by chronicling our discoveries about El Barrio, we will have communicated some of the joys, frustrations, confusions and surprises we encountered along the way.
